The principle antioxidant enzyme assigned by nature to regulate the negative effects of oxygen is superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD together with the complementary enzyme catalase (CAT), reduce and recyle the 'oxygen' waste products' which are generated during cellular production. SOD and catalase act together to recycle what science calls 'oxygen free radicals'. Oxygen free radicals are unbalanced molecules of oxygen which, if left unattended by SOD and catalase, disrupt energy production, damage cells, and generally wreak havoc on all of life's systems.
Excess free radicals, the result of an under- supply of SOD and catalase, cause what is termed 'oxidative stress'-the equivalent of 'rusting' an animal's cells and body chemistry. When an animal's ability to produce SOD and catalase lags behind requirements, fatigue, irritability, sore muscles and joints are often the result. In fact science has determined that oxidative stress plays a critical role in more than 60 health concerns including inflammation, arthritis, cancer, chemical and radiation poisoning and the effects of accidental or surgical trauma, to name a few. Aging and lifespan have been shown to have a direct relationship to the level of SOD and catalase in an animal's body.
