Originally discovered in 1827, taurine's nutritional impact has only recently been recognized. A major sulfur amino acid, taurine's role as a protector of the cell membrane from oxidative attack is just becoming known. "Natural Killer" (NK) white cells are stimulated taurine. In addition, macrophages are encouraged by the presence of taurine to release interleukin-1 (IL-1). Many diseases of neurological nature or immunodeficiency are benefited by the administration of taurien inclduing epilepsy and multiple sclerosis(MS). Other conditions that are benefited by taurine are heart arrhythmia, macular degeneration of the eye, migraine, chronic allergy and chronic fatigue syndrome among others especially where the person demonstrates neurological involvement.
